I strongly recommend holidays in Turkey. It is a superb country full of diversity. No matter what your interests. If it is culture that you like, then Turkey history is dripping with antiquity which includes the world famous Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. If it is sunshine you are craving, then the weather in Turkey is brilliant with coasts extended across the Aegean and Mediterranean and if it is nightlife and a busy lifestyle, then Istanbul or Bodrum can offer a wealth of nightclubs and restaurants to name a few places. The holidays in Turkey have never annoyed us.

Bodrum is an easy place to stay. You have many restaurants to choose from ranging from small cafes where you can find pizza, to expensive restaurants where you can taste true Turkish food which is yummy. In Bodrum itself there are many restaurants that look over the busy harbour where you can sit and watch the world go by. The evening sight is spectacular with the sun setting and the fort lit up on the hill.

We stayed just outside of Bodrum in Ortakent which is much quieter although you still have the luxury of well stocked supermarkets KIPA (owned by Tesco) and Burger King if the need takes you!. The smaller places outside of Bodrum offer a quieter feel where you can sit by the water eating freshly caught fish whilst watching the fishermen and the little boats sail across the harbours. Other villages including Bitez are based by the sea so many of the restaurants are actually on the beach.

We decided to drive up to Ephesus whilst staying in Bodrum. Ephesus has the largest collection of Roman wrecks in the eastern Mediterranean with about 15% of it having been excavated. The ruins that are visible give some idea of the city's original magnificence, the thought that people had walked the streets in 60AD is amazing and to walk along streets from the past and admire the architecture is a trip that I would highly recommend.

Patara is a totally different experience set further south on the Mediterranean. You will see one of the best beaches you can think of. Patara beach is 75km south of Fethiye and is about 20km long. When we went it was not crowded, had white sand and because it is 20km in length meant you can walk along the seashore until you found a spot that you were happy with. The sea was warm and clear and we spent a couple of days there which is unusual for me, as I am really not a beach lover. Also Patara beach I think has the claim of the birthplace of Santa Claus. Work that out if you can. Just back from the beach is an Amphitheatre. We visited this on a Sunday morning and had the entire site to ourselves. Impressive to be able to walk around an Amphitheatre and not have to share it with anyone. You can really start to visualize what it must have been like back in the Roman periods.

Along the coast from Patara is Kalkan which we used to stop by regularly for an evening meal. Kalkan is set up more for the tourist so you can find many shops, flats some very good roof top restaurants where you can eat and look out to sea and a busy nightlife.

I love Turkey. I would recommend holidays in Turkey to anybody as it has so much to offer
